Hauling

Our Bosun penned this hauling song, about setting to sea in a brisk wind.  There is a sense of urgency about pulling up the anchor, raising and trimming the sails to catch the wind and set a course at the beginning of a voyage.    He sings it with a strong sense of rhythm and pace to motivate the crew into action.  Well, that’s his theory, anyhow!  The rest of us have noticed his long standing penchant for songs that remind him of a good ship’s shapely curves….

Hauling

Heave the Capstan round boys
Pull her over
Break the anchor from the mud
And draw it though the water
Bend your backs me boys
Think of the Captain’s daughter
Or we’ll be going under

Haul haul away boys
Haul haul away
Haul haul away boys
Haul haul away
Haul haul away boys
Haul haul away
Or we’ll be going under

Haul on the sheets
Raise the mains’l higher
Don’t you slack me boys
The winds are blowing harder
Snatch and Pull you devils
She’s a curvy wonder
Or well be going under

Pull on the sheets
Tighten up the sails now
Hold on to the wheel
It’s a broad reach thunder
Give her all you’ve got
Until she cries for mercy
Or we’ll be going under
